Author Biography

Gabriel Navia, Universidade Federal da Integração Latino-Americana

Gabriel Navia holds a Master’s degree in Musical Performance (classical guitar) from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the same institution. His current research focuses on the study of diverse tonal repertoires from the 19th to the 21st centuries, encompassing both concert and popular music. He has presented papers at national and international conferences, including EuroMAC 9 (France, 2017), the 17th IASPM Conference (Germany, 2017), TeMA Conferences (2014, 2016, 2019, 2021–25), the Jornadas Interamericanas de Teoría y Análisis Musical (Colombia, 2022, and Costa Rica, 2024), and the SMT Conference (USA, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025). His most recent publications have appeared in Musica Theorica (2020; 2021; 2024), The SAGE International Encyclopedia of Music and Culture (2019), Revista Vórtex (2020), The Routledge Companion to Music Theory Pedagogy (2020), Sonatinas Latino-Americanas para Piano: Guia de Estudos (2022; 2024; 2025) and Teorias estrangeiras no Brasil: migração, aculturação e enculturação (2024). Gabriel is a tenured professor of classical guitar and music theory at the Federal University for Latin American Integration (UNILA) and editor-in-chief of Musica Theorica, the journal of the Brazilian Society for Music Theory and Analysis (TeMA). In 2024, he received the TeMA “Young Researcher” Award in recognition of his scholarly output in the field of Music Theory
