This essay offers reflections on engaging with popular music from a symphonic approach, based on a case study of the “Caribe Sinfónico” project, an artistic production by the Sonar Foundation for the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. A proposal will be shared that promotes the leading role of tradition-bearing communities in the interactions between "popular" and "art" music, by understanding these traditions as distinct modes of producing musical knowledge and highlighting the importance of engaging with both practices for the development of professional competencies in music.
