Many historians and analysts have recognized Liszt’s influence on the symphonic poems of Leopoldo Miguéz in his mature phase. This article aims to demonstrate the existence of such influence also in his initial phase, which appears as an intertextual relation between the choral epilogue of the fourth movement (Andante mistico assai sostenuto) of Miguéz’s Sinfonia em Si bemol maior, Op.6 (1882), and the second section (choral epilogue) of the third movement of Franz Liszt’s Faust Symphony (1854), called Mefistofeles. Besides Liszt, we also show the influence of Hector Berlioz in Miguéz’s poetics by the use of a fanfare and a choir with orchestra that include references to Liszt’s third movement of the Grande Symphonie Funèbre et Triomphale, Op.15 (1840), called Apothéose.
