This article discusses the role that the ideas of expectation and context play in determining functionality, considering conditions found especially in extended harmony of popular music. Based on the notion that harmonic analysis in these contexts can be stratified into different levels of observation and with the support of studies on harmonic structure, probability, and musical cognition (considering the concepts of interest in this article), specific typologies and an analytical model are proposed, both applied in the concluding section.
