Henrique Oswald's Sonata-Fantasia, Op. 44

A case of two-dimensional sonata

Abstract

In this text, I approach Henrique Oswald’s Sonata-Fantasia Op. 44 from the point of view of a two-dimensional sonata. Works in sonata form, but composed of several movements performed continuously, are sometimes organized, and composed of sections of exposition, development and recapitulation, as in a sonata form, which are presented consecutively in a single movement. To elucidate the composer’s intention, I take Vande Moortele's two-dimensional sonata theory as my main theoretical foundation, and analyze formal, thematic-motivic and tonal aspects.

Norton Dudeque, University of Paraná

Norton Dudeque realizou mestrado em Performance musical - University Of Western Ontario (1991), mestrado em Musicologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1997), doutorado em Música (Ph.D.) - University of Reading (2002). Realizou estágio pós-doutoral no Kings College em Londres (2012). Atualmente é professor associado da Universidade Federal do Paraná e atua no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Música da UFPR. Tem publicado artigos com ênfase em Teoria e análise musical. É autor de Music Theory and Analysis in the Writings of Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) (Ashgate, 2005) e de Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras, Intertextuality and Stylization (Routledge, 2022).
